I had a friend of my mom who passed away from AIDS on 1986. I was raised in the gay community in Chicago in the late 70’s to 90’s. Some of these names are familiar. Such a sad time. Rip to all these beautiful men. So sad.

As a gay man, I don’t agree with all these men’s conclusions. I hear them though, and some of their insights and criticisms resonate with me as well. The parental wound resonated with me - and maybe we have more distance from our fathers because we are more feminine from birth- and the way porn preys on our darker wounds to amplify them also resonates with me. I am not fond of Christianity as the answer after the church burned and tortured queer men and women for so long, but I agree that our community needs spirituality and positive discussions on health and care more. We need more talk of boundaries and self-respect. I don’t think women need to be the boundary setters. I think anyone can help suggest these boundaries if they are educated, loving, and empowered. I so appreciate hearing from both of these men as I work on sex and love addiction in my 12 step program. My idea of a higher power is from Gabor Mate: love, unity, and creative energy. I also learn a lot from Buddhism via DBT and some books on Buddhism for laypeople. I don’t think gay culture discusses safe, sane, and consensual enough in BDSM. Some of my kinks have not been safe or sane - and I could find men to consent to them. When I would bring them up, others might say they’re not interested. I appreciate the men who occasionally told me, “Please love yourself better. You’re worth more than treating yourself that way.” As the more extreme BDSM was an attempt to enact my darkest wounds of worthlessness. The most beautiful message from monotheism via my 12 step program that I gather is that we are God’s children, so we hold inherent, unshakable dignity in this heritage. We don’t need to grovel for love and approval in our knees. We can stand up proud in the love that we are children of the Divine. Even as a non-monotheist, I take that with me - I am a child of Mother Earth, the Universe, the Stars. I hold beauty and dignity within me - and I should treat myself, my fellows, and the Earth with appreciation and dignity. I appreciate how Phillip respects that while Christianity is for him, others may have a different spiritual path and it’s not for him to judge. I was so enthralled with him as a young person watching porn - and as a grown adult now, I am so proud of the spiritual man he has become even tho I don’t agree with him on every detail and have a different journey. This is a helpful conversation, Joseph. I considered getting a tattoo in college but could never decide on anything. After I became Orthodox, it became increasingly difficult to justify it to myself. I once thought, "I want to get a tattoo so I can show people I'm a Christian." I pictured myself with a three-bar cross on my forearm. Then I realized, show people you're a Christian by the way you live. Another important factor is money. Why spend $50-100-200 on a tattoo when that money could be given to those who need it? If I can spare that kind of money on a luxury, would it not be better to give it to an organization like OCPM or IOCC? I've come to the realization that while I am not opposed to tattoos (I enjoy them as works of art) I wouldn't get one except under particular circumstances. For instance, if a friend of mine got me a gift certificate to a studio, and that certificate could not be redeemed for cash. It's either use it or lose it. If someone is going to get tattooed, why not me, and why not get something worthwhile like the Chi Rho? But other than a specific instance like that, I don't see it happening. But I love Shayne's work and appreciate his perspective!

Our biggest failure with aids back then was not finding a cure but showing love and being there for them. What many of victims saw until the end especially in the early days was fear and bigotry and the feeling of the world abandoning them.

Guys, thank you. Here in England we can see the architectural effects of the Industrial Revolution everywhere. In my city, the canal ends in the city centre and Victorian buildings are everywhere. We have a museum to steam powered engines. But I never thought about the effects of the IR on fatherlessness and on families. This is something I will look at further. Thank you for raising this issue. Here in the uk, so many churches have been and are fake. I was out of church for 10 years after terrible experience after terrible experience, often women (leaders) trying to get with me and of course I was the one forced out of the church or people just being plain nasty. I guess people don’t like someone who is genuine about Jesus holding up that mirror. The Catholic Church here is trying to repair if it ever can some of the damage to children and survivors of clergy abuse, it is against same sex relationships, against abortion etc. the local main campaigner knows me. Going to the Bible study at the particular church I go to has been a wonderful experience. It is a true study of the Bible, not the usual “here is something Jesus said, how does it relate to your life?” And then the conversation becomes about every attention seeker in the room. No, the Bible study that is currently taking place is about the Bible and Jesus. And through this I am able to get on with people from the church. At this point in time, it is good for me. I think too many UK churches are more like social services than a church. The purpose of church is to worship Jesus, whereas many churches focus on bringing in money and doing good works. I left one church after it started having pole dancing classes in the hall because those classes brought in £39 per week. So about $50. Pole dancing classes in the church. The minister (leader) had no idea about it, was shocked and found out just ten minutes before I did and said he understood if i need to leave the church because of it. None of this is because people were woke. They just didn’t know Jesus. Church is often a club in the uk. A place for people to gain recognition and win trophies for their cabinet. To get their photo in the local or national news. Actually loving Jesus, people who do this are a minority in a lot of uk churches. This is why church is a very difficult place to be for people who do love Jesus. So church was a real struggle for me for 24 years. Different denominations, different cities and towns, but all the same terrible experience of bullying and perversities. This is something we need to address in the uk. And it is why I am so glad to be in the church I am in now. I’m not Catholic but I am glad to be in a Catholic Church right now. It is not a place of abuse or bullying. It is a place where very genuine people are meeting with Jesus. Some are not so genuine and going to church is part of their tradition from Africa or Asia. But for some of us - from whatever country - it is a genuine thing for us to meet together, have the bread and wine and praise Jesus. Who knows what God is going to build? I am so glad that the Orthodox Church in the USA is growing and is a place of healing and family for people seeking those things. God is at work. That is very clear. God is at work. The Problem with Catholics is we think that we have to defend our Clergy and we should but make sure you have the facts . A Catholic Priest who was an army Chaplin and retired with the rank of Lt Colonel knew Pell when he was training for the Priesthood .Pell was accused of touching a young altar boy on a camp .The Church investigated it and did nothing they were the words of the Army Chaplin who I knew as a priest in my parish and also was my Chaplin when I was in the Army .Cardinal Pell was denied a state funeral in Victoria Australia .Yet the Lt Col was given a state funeral because he was admired by everybody Catholic and non Catholics.Like McCarrick he denied everything and the Pope believed him .

The sexual perversion in the catholic church is rampant. I spoke out against sexual perversion in my knights of columbus meeting and got big push back. No one wanted to hear it and the pastor that was a knight, let me hang out to dry. Sad to say I quit the knights. I am not going to go to meetings and having grown men who are catholic tell dirty jokes and laugh about porn movies. I WANT TO GO TO HEAVEN.

I think the gay people in the catholic chuch that choose not to engage in gay relations, are the very people that could bring the virtue of celibacy back to the catholic chuch. After all who could argue with a gay person who promotes celibacy. I am single and I am not gay but celibate. It is a great blessing from God, because I feel free. It is an amazing grace God grants to straight or gay that practice celebacy. If you are not married and become sexually perverted, you become chained by satan and your life is miserable. If you ask God to free you from the sexual sins, and receive the sacraments frequently, God will transform you. He will give you His power to change. I know because I changed with Gods grace. God is very very gracious. You just need to try and lean on Him and He will help you. My favorite prayer is " The God of Power has given me His strength. He has kept me in the way of Holiness and He has given Me His strength."
